Dog Friendly Columbus

We are still being incredibly cautious when traveling given the pandemic that we are currently in. Although we are both vaccinated we are still not flying and we are limiting our time indoors in public. However we are starting to feel more comfortable with traveling near home, where we can drive to. We have had a lot of fun in 2020 and 2021 camping in our new trailer but this is our first trip out and about in public.

We decided on a long weekend in Columbus, Ohio—just 3.5 from where we live in Michigan—where we could spend some time together and with Juneau.

Here is how we spent a dog friendly long weekend in Columbus:

Place to Stay: The Harlow

The Harlow on Main is a new apartment building in downtown Columbus that is also listed on Airbnb by the developer. The Harlow is a short distance from Columbus Commons and around the block from Late Night Slice and The Walrus. It is close to bike and scooter share hubs and has private parking. Even better, it’s completely dog friendly and it has the lowest “pet fees” of basically anywhere else we could find on Airbnb. We had a great one bedroom which plenty of space for the three of us!

Stretch Your Legs in the City: Scioto Mile

Located in the heart of downtown Columbus, the Scioto Mile is an urban oasis comprised of more than 175 acres of lush parkland. Stretching along the waterfront from the vibrant Arena District to the natural beauty of the Whittier Peninsula, our riverfront parks connect downtown to the Scioto River through an integrated system of parks, boulevards, bikeways and pedestrian paths. This was the perfect place for us to enjoy some nature in the city as well as let Juneau walk off some energy during the day.

Place to Eat: Brewdog’s doghouse

Brewdog is one of Marc’s favorite craft breweries because of their great selection of nonalcoholic beers so when we found out that their main brewery has a full hotel, restaurant, and outdoor games area that caters to dogs just as much as it does to human, we just had to go! The Doghouse looked amazing but we didn’t stay there because we wanted to be closer to a walkable downtown, however we did spend an evening there for dinner. The food and drinks were great and Juneau loved being in a restaurant and seeing all the other dogs and people. On site there was also a dog park and pond for the doggos and axe throwing and giant Jenga for the humans.

TIP: Make reservations early. We had a 2 hour wait on a Saturday evening.

Day Trip: Hocking Hills

This is our second time going to Hocking Hills and it never disappoints! Hocking Hills provides a variety of outdoor activities in a splendid natural setting. The 2,356-acre park has towering cliffs, waterfalls, and deep hemlock-shaded gorges that are guaranteed to appease any hiker or naturalist. Some of our favorite areas to hike include Cantwell Cliffs, Old Man’s Creek and Rock House.
